- Component
- BACK OVER PREVENTION:DISPLAY FUNCTION; ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE
- Problem
- Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2019-2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Freightliner Sprinter vehicles. The MBUX multimedia system software may cause the display to remain black, or reboot after startup. This could result in the rearview camera image not displaying properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
- Risk
- A backup camera that displays a blank image reduces the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
- Remedy
- The multimedia system software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. DVUSA issued owners an interim notification on July 23, 2021. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA's number for this recall is VS3UXPOBOX.
- Notes
- Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
What this recall means for you
Certain 2019 Sprinter vans sold under the Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner names have multimedia system software that can leave the display black or cause it to reboot after startup. When this happens, the rearview camera image may not appear properly, so the driver cannot see what is behind the vehicle.
A backup camera that shows a blank image reduces the driver's view to the rear, which increases the risk of a crash or injury, especially when backing up near people or objects. The vehicles fail to meet federal rear visibility requirements.
The multimedia system software will be updated at no cost, either by a dealer or through an over-the-air update. Owners can contact Daimler Vans USA customer service at 1-877-762-8267 and reference recall number VS3UXPOBOX. Check your VIN for open recalls on your vehicle.
