BMW R1200 RT Recall 15V141: Rear Wheel Can Loosen and Cause Loss of Control

NHTSA campaign 15V141, reported March 11, 2015, 43,426 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The rear wheel mounting flange, which is aluminum on the affected motorcycles, may crack if the rear wheel mounting bolts are overtightened. A cracked flange can allow the mounting bolts to loosen, so the rear wheel may not stay secured to the motorcycle. This can cause a loss of stability and raises the risk of a crash.

BMW will notify owners, and authorized dealers will replace the existing aluminum rear wheel flange with a steel one at no charge. The recall began on May 7, 2015. Owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, and should check their VIN for open recalls.
