2017 Newmar Dutch Star recalls
Diesel fuel leak can cause fire in motorhomes
A sealing washer in the high-pressure fuel rail assembly may not seat correctly in the pilot boreholes, which can allow diesel fuel to leak from the rail.
Fuel rail may leak, creating a fire risk
The high pressure fuel rail assembly on certain diesel motorhomes may leak fuel.
Brake lights may fail to illuminate, raising crash risk
The brake light switch can rub against the windshield wiper mechanism.
Rear lights and turn signals may fail, raising crash risk
Some motorhomes may have had their rear power distribution module damaged during manufacturing.
Rear lights may fail, raising crash risk
The rear Power Distribution Module (PDM) in certain motorhomes built on a Daimler Trucks chassis may have been damaged during manufacturing.
Headlights May Go Dark When Switching to High Beams
On certain motorhomes, the low beam headlights turn off when the driver switches to the high beams, when both sets should stay lit.
Steering Hose May Rub Starter, Causing Fire or Steering Loss
A power steering hose on certain motorhomes may be routed incorrectly and rub against the power stud on the starter motor.
Low beam headlights may not stay on with high beams
On certain 2017-2018 Newmar Ventana, Ventana LE and Dutch Star motorhomes built on a Freightliner chassis, the low beam headlights do not also light up as intended when the high beams are turned on.
Loose ATS Power Connection Can Overheat and Cause Fire
A loose power connection at the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) in certain Newmar motorhomes can cause heat to build up in the wiring.
Fire extinguishers may clog or fail to discharge
Certain Newmar motorhomes are equipped with Kidde plastic-handle or push-button "Pindicator" fire extinguishers that may become clogged, so the extinguisher may not discharge as expected or may require excessive force to activate.
Battery Cable Can Chafe and Short, Raising Fire Risk
A battery cable mounting bracket may not have been installed correctly on these motorhomes.
Night Shades Can Drop Mid-Drive, Blocking Driver View
Powered night shades on the driver and passenger sides can be lowered with the remote while the ignition is on.
Front Ball Joints Can Loosen, Causing Steering Loss
Certain motorhomes built on a Spartan Motors chassis may have front suspension ball joints on the independent front suspension (IFS) modules that can loosen and separate.
Steering hose may rub starter, risking fire
Some 2016-2017 Newmar Dutch Star and Ventana motorhomes built between January 22, 2016, and November 7, 2016, with Cummins ISL engines may have a power steering hose routed incorrectly.
Unintended Acceleration or Deceleration Risk From Throttle Wiring
Certain motorhomes built on Spartan Motors chassis have throttle circuit wires that may not be twisted to cancel out electromagnetic interference.
Wardrobe slide-out may extend unexpectedly, raising crash risk
On certain motorhomes, the motor that moves the wardrobe slide-out may have been installed without a brake.
Loose Front Trim Can Strike Occupants and Cause Crash
Front fascia wood trim on certain motorhomes may separate from the slide-out and could contact the driver or a passenger.
Wipers Can Shut Off Headlights, Reducing Driver Visibility
On certain 2017 Newmar Ventana, Ventana VL, and Dutch Star motorhomes built on a Freightliner chassis, turning off the windshield wipers may also turn off the headlights.

What owners report
My DEF sensor failed which required towing on Interstate 80 in a highly congested area. This same failure has happened to many other motorhomes and trucks. It creates a very unsafe situation which needs to be corrected. Please require the manufacturer to correct the flaw and recall all in use. Thank you.
DEF Head Failure - Spartan Chassis.
RV WENT INTO 5MPH DERATE DUE TO DEF HEADER MALFUNCTION. I WAS VERY LUCKY TO BE IN AN RV PARK, HOWEVER THERE IS NO WAY TO REPLACE THE DEF HEADER WITHOUT RAISING THE RV (DUE TO THE LOCATION OF THE TANK), SO IT COULDN'T BE REPLACED THERE. I HAD AN APPOINTMENT TO REPLACE THE DEF HEADER AT FREIGHTLINER OF HOUSTON, DUE TO THE WARNING LIGHTS. HOWEVER WHEN I STARTED TO DRIVE THERE FOR THE APPOINTMENT, I FOUND THE RV WOULD NOT GO OVER 5MPH. SINCE THE DEALER WAS 60 MILES AWAY (AND IT WAS THE NEAREST ONE), THERE WAS NO WAY I COULD MAKE IT.
I OWN A 2017 NEWMAR DUTCH STAR MOTOR HOME ON A FREIGHTLINER CHASSIS. THE DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID (DEF) SENSOR (DEF HEAD) HAS FAILED TWICE. THE FIRST FAILED AT 14,795 MILES AND WAS REPLACED ON 9/24/18. THAT HEAD LASTED ANOTHER 15,000 MILES AND FAILED AT 31,218 AND WAS REPLACED ON 11/25/2020. EACH HEAD LASTED ABOUT 15,000 MILES OR 2 YEARS. THE PART IS MADE BY SHAW DEVELOPMENT WHICH HAS NOT ANSWERED REPEATED ATTEMPTS FOR INFORMATION. AS PART OF THE EMISSIONS SYSTEM, FREIGHTLINER HAS REPLACED BOTH HEADS UNDER THE 5 YEAR FEDERALLY MANDATED WARRANTY ON EMISSION SYSTEMS. CUMMINS (WHICH MAKES THE ENGINE) ALSO IS INVOLVED IN EMISSIONS. THE THREE SEEM TO PASS THE BUCK FROM ONE TO THE OTHER LEA
WE HAVE HAD TWO DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID (DEF) HEAD FAILURES THAT HAVE REQUIRED REPLACEMENT OF THE DEF HEAD UNIT. THE FIRST SITUATION RESULTED IN A DERATING OF THE ENGINE, LIMITING OUR SPEED TO 4 OR 5 MPH WHILE ON THE INTERSTATE. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED 200 MILES TO A SERVICE CENTER, THEN IT TOOK A WEEK TO OBTAIN REPLACEMENT PARTS. THE SECOND SITUATION HAPPENED WITHIN 5 MILES OF A SERVICE CENTER AND WE WERE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE SERVICE CENTER. HOWEVER, WE ARE SEEING HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR SITUATIONS BEING POSTED TO RV FORUMS ON VARIOUS SOCIAL NETWORKS. A RECALL NEEDS TO BE MADE FOR ALL CUMMINS ENGINES THAT HAVE DEF SYSTEMS. AS PART OF THE SOLUTION, THE DESIGNS NEE
