Newmar Dutch Star Recall 17V809: Fire extinguishers may clog or fail to discharge

NHTSA campaign 17V809, reported December 15, 2017, 34,699 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain Newmar motorhomes are equipped with Kidde plastic-handle or push-button "Pindicator" fire extinguishers that may become clogged, so the extinguisher may not discharge as expected or may require excessive force to activate. In certain models, the nozzle can also detach from the valve assembly with enough force to cause injury and render the extinguisher inoperable.

If a fire occurs and the extinguisher does not work properly, the risk of injury increases. Owners should check whether their motorhome is covered by this recall using the list of affected vehicles and fire extinguisher models in the recall documents.

Newmar will notify owners, who should contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher at no cost. Kidde customer service can be reached toll-free at 1-855-262-3540 or at www.kidde.com (click "Product Safety Recall"), and Newmar customer service can be reached at 1-574-773-7791 (Newmar recall number 17E-062). Owners can also check their vehicle identification number for any open recalls.
