Tesla Model Y Recall 26V283: Delayed Rearview Camera Image Raises Backover Crash Risk

NHTSA campaign 26V283, reported May 4, 2026, 218,868 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles running software version 2026.8.6 may show the rearview camera image late after the vehicle is shifted into reverse. This means the driver may not see what is behind the vehicle as quickly as required by federal rear visibility standards, which are designed to help prevent backover crashes.

A delayed camera image reduces the driver's view of the area behind the vehicle, which increases the risk of a crash. Until the issue is fixed, be extra cautious when backing up, check mirrors and look over your shoulder, and keep children, pets, and objects clear of the path behind your vehicle.

Tesla is providing a free over-the-air software update to correct the problem, and owner notification letters were mailed July 3, 2026. You can contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752 with questions. Check your vehicle's VIN on the NHTSA recall website for any open recalls, and reference Tesla recall number SB-26-00-001.
