Jeep Cherokee Recall 26V290: Jeep Cherokee Power Unit May Fail, Causing Loss of Drive or Rollaway

NHTSA campaign 26V290, reported May 7, 2026, 61,711 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2019 to 2023 Jeep Cherokee vehicles have a power transfer unit (PTU), the part that sends power to the rear wheels in the drivetrain, that may fail. A failed PTU can cause a loss of drive power or allow the vehicle to roll away, which raises the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will update the Drivetrain Control Module, PTU, and Electronic Park Brake software, and will replace the PTU where needed. The repair is free of charge at an authorized dealer. Interim owner notification letters were mailed June 25, 2026, and additional letters will follow once the final remedy is available.

Check whether your vehicle is involved by entering your VIN at NHTSA.gov once it becomes searchable on May 14, 2026, or by checking with a Jeep dealer. You can also contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and reference recall number 40D.
