Tesla Model 3 Recall 22V235: External speaker can drown out pedestrian warning sounds

NHTSA campaign 22V235, reported April 12, 2022, 594,894 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain Tesla Model 3, Model S, Model X and Model Y vehicles from model years 2017 through 2022 have a Boombox feature that can play sounds through the external speaker while the vehicle is moving. This can obscure the Pedestrian Warning System sounds, meaning the vehicles do not meet the minimum sound requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 141 for hybrid and electric vehicles.

Because pedestrians may not hear an approaching vehicle, the risk of a crash is increased. Tesla will install an over-the-air software update that disables the Boombox function when the vehicle is in Drive, Neutral or Reverse, including Summon and Smart Summon. The repair is free. Owner notification letters were mailed June 6, 2022. You can contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752 (recall SB-22-00-003), and you can check your VIN for open recalls at NHTSA.gov or an authorized dealer.

This recall supersedes recall 22V-063. If your vehicle is configured with Summon or Smart Summon and was already remedied under 22V-063, it still needs the new remedy software installed.

Official recall notice

Safety recall 22V235Tesla, Inc.
Component
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE; FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS:EXTERNAL/PEDESTRIAN ALERT
Problem
Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Model Y, Model X, Model S, and 2017-2022 Model 3 vehicles. The Boombox function allows sounds to be played through an external speaker while the vehicle is in motion, which may obscure the Pedestrian Warning System (PWS) sounds. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 141, "Minimum Sound Requirements for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles."
Risk
Pedestrians may be unaware of an approaching vehicle if the PWS sounds are obscured, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Tesla will perform an over-the-air (OTA) software update that will disable the Boombox functionality when the vehicle is in Drive, Neutral and Reverse modes, including Summon and Smart Summon, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 6, 2022. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla's number for this recall is SB-22-00-003.
