Mazda MAZDA6 Recall 18V018: Passenger airbag inflator may explode, sending metal fragments into occupants

NHTSA campaign 18V018, reported January 9, 2018, 70,227 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain Mazda vehicles have a passenger-side frontal airbag inflator that can rupture during a crash that deploys the airbag. The propellant inside can degrade over time after long-term exposure to humidity and temperature changes, which may cause the inflator to explode.

If this happens, sharp metal fragments can strike the driver or other occupants, which may result in serious injury or death. The recall covers specific model years and the states or regions listed in the official notice, so check whether your vehicle is included.

The repair is free: Mazda will notify owners, and authorized dealers will replace the front passenger airbag inflator with an alternate inflator at no charge. You can contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, and you should also check your VIN for open recalls on the NHTSA website.
