RAM 1500 Recall 15V459: Driver airbag may deploy unexpectedly, raising injury risk

NHTSA campaign 15V459, reported July 22, 2015, 1,059,444 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

On certain 2012-2014 Ram pickup trucks built between January 2011 and October 2014 with the Electronic Vehicle Information Center option, the steering wheel wiring harness can rub against the driver airbag module retainer spring. This abrasion may cause an electrical short that makes the driver's frontal airbag deploy without warning.

An unintended airbag deployment can itself cause injury and may increase the risk of a vehicle crash, since the driver could lose control of the truck.

FCA US LLC (Chrysler) will notify owners. Authorized dealers will inspect the steering wheel wiring harness, repair it if needed, and secure it, and protective caps will be added to the ends of the airbag retainer spring. All repairs are free of charge. Contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 with questions, and check your vehicle's VIN for open recalls.
