Tesla Model X Recall 23V862: Cabin doors can unlock in a crash, raising injury risk

NHTSA campaign 23V862, reported December 19, 2023, 120,423 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain Model S and Model X vehicles from 2022 and 2023 may have cabin doors that unlock during a crash. Because of this, the vehicles do not fully comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 214, which covers side impact protection.

If a door unlocks during a crash, it may unlatch and open, which increases the risk of injury to occupants. Owners should take this recall seriously even if they have not noticed any problems with the doors.

Tesla is providing a free over-the-air software update that can be installed remotely, so no dealer visit is required for the fix. Owners were mailed notification letters on February 17, 2024, and can contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752 with recall number SB-23-00-009. You can also check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
