- Problem
- Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2017 Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles. These vehicles may be missing spot welds on the front side wall, connecting the door portal to the hinge reinforcements in the A-pillar area, possibly affecting vehicle strength in a crash.
- Risk
- If the missing welds affect body strength, there may be an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.
- Remedy
- DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and add any missing spot welds, free of charge. The recall began on July 2, 2018. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267.
- Notes
- Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
What this recall means for you
Some vans have spot welds missing on the front side wall, where the door frame connects to the hinge reinforcements near the A-pillar. These welds help the body hold its strength, so the missing welds could reduce that strength in a crash.
If the body is weaker than designed, occupants may face a higher risk of injury in a collision. Owners should not wait for a problem to appear; the defect is about structure, so the risk is present even if the vehicle seems normal to drive.
The repair is free. Dealers will inspect the vehicle and add any missing spot welds, and Daimler Vans USA will notify owners directly. You can also call DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267, and check your VIN for open recalls to confirm whether your vehicle is affected.
