Subaru Outback Recall 23V755: Failing Shifter Switch Can Hide Reverse Lights and Camera

NHTSA campaign 23V755, reported November 9, 2023, 95,830 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The park/neutral start interlock switch, also called the inhibitor switch, can fail because a weld may not be strong enough to keep water out. Once water gets in, the switch can stop working properly.

If the inhibitor switch fails, the reverse lights may not turn on and the rearview camera image may not display when you shift into reverse. Without these, other drivers and people behind your vehicle may not see that you are backing up, and you may lose the view you rely on while reversing, which raises the risk of a crash.

The repair is free. Dealers will replace the inhibitor switch at no charge. Owner letters were mailed January 8, 2024. You can also contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783, referencing recall WRQ-23, and check your VIN for open recalls on your vehicle.
