BMW I7 Recall 23V700: Steering Wheel Hands-On Sensor May Fail to Detect Hands

NHTSA campaign 23V700, reported October 18, 2023, 12,296 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

A ground connection to the steering wheel may not have been attached correctly on certain 2023-2024 BMW vehicles. As a result, the hands-on detection system may not work, so it may fail to notice when the driver's hands are off the steering wheel.

If the system does not detect hands off the wheel, it may not activate the emergency stopping assistant, which increases the risk of a crash. Owners should have their vehicle checked promptly.

The remedy is free: an authorized BMW dealer will inspect the steering wheel ground connection and reattach it as needed. Owners who received the notification letter mailed December 8, 2023, can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. You can also check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
