Freightliner Cascadia Recall 23V299: Trucks May Understeer in Turns, Raising Crash Risk

NHTSA campaign 23V299, reported April 26, 2023, 266 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain heavy trucks may understeer during a J-turn, a maneuver where the vehicle turns sharply to a stop or reverses direction. The electronic stability control system and tire combination on these vehicles can cause this behavior, meaning the vehicle may not respond as expected to steering input. The vehicles also fail to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 136 for electronic stability control systems on heavy vehicles.

Understeering during a J-turn may increase the risk of a crash. Owners should be aware of this when maneuvering at low speeds in tight turns.

The remedy is free: the manufacturer will replace the tires at no cost to the owner. Owner notification letters were mailed June 19, 2023. Owners can contact Daimler Trucks North America customer service at 1-800-547-0712 for more information, and should check their vehicle identification number for any open recalls.
