Volkswagen Atlas Recall 22V086: Missing Weight Label Can Lead to Overloading and Crash Risk

NHTSA campaign 22V086, reported February 16, 2022, 3,648 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs from model years 2018 to 2021 were equipped with accessory side steps, but the label showing the reduced gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), which accounts for the added weight of the side steps, was not installed. Without that label, the vehicle may be loaded beyond its safe limit, and the vehicles do not fully comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 110, which covers tire selection and rims.

An overloaded vehicle can lose control, which increases the risk of a crash. Owners should be aware that the missing label is the defect in this recall.

The remedy is free: an authorized Volkswagen dealer will install the reduced GVWR label at no charge. Owners who received notification letters mailed March 31, 2022 should contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 with recall number 09D9. You can also check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
