Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner C2 Recall 19V550: Roof emergency hatch handle can break, blocking outside exit

NHTSA campaign 19V550, reported July 25, 2019, 3,080 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The external handle on the roof escape hatch of certain school buses can break during normal use. The hatch is built to let occupants out through the roof in an emergency, and a broken external handle can make it difficult to open from outside the bus.

In an emergency, a roof hatch that cannot be easily opened from outside increases the risk of injury to students and others trying to get out of the bus or to rescuers trying to get in.

The repair is free: an authorized dealer will install a new handle at no charge. Owners can contact Daimler Trucks North America customer service at 1-800-547-0712, referencing recall FL-819, and should check their vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
