Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner C2 Recall 19V444: Rear brakes may drag and overheat, risking smoke or fire

NHTSA campaign 19V444, reported June 11, 2019, 11,546 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The driver-side rear brakes on certain school buses fitted with Bendix air disc brakes may drag, meaning they can stay partially applied when the driver is not pressing the pedal. This can cause the wheel end to reach high temperatures, which raises the risk of smoke and fire. In a serious case, the bus may need to be evacuated, which can increase the risk of injury.

The remedy is free. Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) will notify owners, and authorized dealers will install a new caliper with an updated clearance adjustment mechanism at no charge. The recall began August 9, 2019. Owners can contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712, referencing recall FL-818.

If you own or operate one of these buses, check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls and schedule the repair with an authorized dealer as soon as possible.
