Mercedes-Benz Metris Recall 19V290: Steering assist may fail, making steering harder and raising crash risk

NHTSA campaign 19V290, reported April 10, 2019, 9,471 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2016-2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris vans, sold or registered in 23 states and Washington DC, have aluminum bolts that attach the power steering gear assist motor to the gear housing. These bolts can corrode and fracture, which may cause a reduction or complete loss of power steering assist.

If power steering assist is lost, steering becomes much harder, especially at lower speeds. That increased steering effort may raise the risk of a crash.

Dealers will replace the aluminum bolts with steel bolts free of charge. Owners will be notified by mail, but you can contact Daimler Vans USA customer service at 1-877-762-8267 (recall number VS2SCHRALU) and check your VIN for open recalls.
