Honda Civic Recall 18V266: Seat Pad May Block Side Air Bag During a Crash

NHTSA campaign 18V266, reported April 26, 2018, 69 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Replacement front seatback pads for some 2017 Civic Hatchback and Civic Type R vehicles were made without slits for the seat-mounted side air bags. If the pad is in place during a crash that deploys the side air bag, the pad can interfere with the bag and affect how it performs, which means the vehicle does not meet federal side impact safety requirements.

If the seat-mounted side air bags do not deploy correctly in a crash, the risk of injury is higher. Honda will notify affected owners, and dealers will replace the front seatback pads at no charge. Owners can call Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138, and you can check your VIN for open recalls to see if your vehicle is included.

Component

Problem
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback and Civic Type R vehicles. Driver and front passenger seatback pads sold as replacement service parts were made without slit openings for the seat-mounted side air bags. In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, the seatback pad would interfere and adversely affect air bag performance. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 214, "Side Impact Protection."
Risk
If the seat-mounted air bags cannot not deploy correctly in the event of a crash, there would be an increased risk of injury.
