Subaru Outback Recall 18V012: Passenger airbag inflator may explode, sending metal fragments

NHTSA campaign 18V012, reported January 9, 2018, 64,179 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The passenger-side frontal airbag inflator in these vehicles can rupture when the airbag deploys in a crash. The propellant inside can degrade over long-term exposure to humidity and temperature changes, which may cause the inflator to explode.

If this happens, sharp metal fragments can strike the front passenger, the driver, or other occupants, which may result in serious injury or death. This recall applies to vehicles sold or registered in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The repair is free: an authorized Subaru dealer will replace the passenger airbag inflator at no charge. Owners can contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783 (recall number TKA-18), and should check their VIN for open recalls.
