NHTSA campaign 17V546, reported August 31, 2017, 51,943 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Welding debris left inside the front passenger seat frame during manufacturing can damage the occupant classification system wiring. If that wiring is damaged, the vehicle may lose power steering assist and the passenger airbag may be turned off. Both effects raise the risk of a crash and the risk of injury in a crash.

The remedy is free at an authorized dealer. Dealers will attach a protective pad to the seat frame, and if the occupant classification harness is already damaged, they will apply insulating tape to it. Owners can also contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 (Mazda recall number 1517H). Check your VIN for open recalls to confirm whether your vehicle is affected.
