Ford F-150 Recall 16V345: Brake fluid can leak into booster, causing front brake loss

NHTSA campaign 16V345, reported May 24, 2016, 225,012 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain vehicles built between August 2013 and August 2014 with 3.5L engines may have a master cylinder rear cup seal that can roll. This can let brake fluid leak from the primary reservoir into the brake booster.

If fluid is lost from the primary reservoir, the front brakes can lose function completely, which raises the risk of a crash. Owners should treat any unusual brake behavior seriously and have the vehicle checked promptly.

The remedy is free: an authorized dealer will replace the brake master cylinder and, if necessary, the brake booster. Owners can also contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, and should check their VIN for open recalls.
