Hyundai Sonata Recall 16V232: Driver's Front Airbag May Not Fully Inflate in a Crash

NHTSA campaign 16V232, reported April 21, 2016, 33 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain vehicles may have a driver's frontal airbag that is missing a chemical enhancer needed for the second stage of deployment. In some crashes, the first stage of the airbag will deploy as intended, but the second stage may not, leaving the driver with less protection and a higher risk of injury.

An airbag that does not fully inflate reduces its ability to cushion the driver during a collision. Owners will be notified by Hyundai. The driver's frontal airbag module will be replaced at no cost at an authorized dealer. To check whether your vehicle is affected, look up your VIN for open recalls, or contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 and reference recall number 144.
