Volkswagen Passat Recall 16V079: Driver Airbag Inflator May Rupture, Spraying Metal Fragments

NHTSA campaign 16V079, reported February 10, 2016, 151,767 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The driver's frontal airbag inflator can build up excessive internal pressure when the airbag deploys. This pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, sending metal fragments toward the driver or other occupants in a crash.

If the driver's airbag deploys in a crash, a ruptured inflator could cause serious injury or death from flying metal fragments. Affected vehicles include certain Volkswagen Passat and Audi A3 and A4 Cabriolet models from the 2005 to 2013 model years.

The remedy is free. Dealers will replace the driver's frontal airbag inflator at no charge. Volkswagen owners can call 1-800-893-5298 and Audi owners can call 1-800-253-2834, or check your vehicle identification number for open recalls.
