Kenworth T680 Recall 15V457: Brake Air Lines May Be Reversed, Risking Loss of Braking

NHTSA campaign 15V457, reported July 22, 2015, 334 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Some 2016 Kenworth T440, T470, T660, T680, T800, T880, and W900 trucks built between February 16 and March 9, 2015 may have the primary and secondary service brake air lines connected in reverse at the SR-7 spring brake valve. If the main brake circuit fails, the backup circuit may not provide adequate braking, which violates federal air brake safety standards.

A loss of braking ability raises the risk of a crash. Drivers should be aware that the backup system may not stop the truck as expected if the primary circuit fails.

Owners will be notified by Kenworth. Authorized dealers will inspect the truck and correct the air line installation as needed at no cost. Owners can contact Kenworth customer service at 1-425-828-5000, and should check their VIN for open recalls.

Problem
PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain model year 2016 Kenworth T440, T470, T660, T680, T800, T880, and W900 trucks manufactured February 16, 2015, to March 9, 2015. The affected vehicles are equipped with an SR-7 spring brake valve assembly that may have had the primary and secondary service brake applications installed in reverse. In the event of a failure in the primary or secondary circuit, the redundant circuit would not provide adequate service brake functionality. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 121, "Air Brake Systems."
Risk
A loss of braking ability would increase the risk of a crash.
