- Component
- VISIBILITY:POWER WINDOW DEVICES AND CONTROLS
- Problem
- Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2017 Escape vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 16V617. The power-operated windows may exert excessive force when encountering an object, before they automatically reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 118, "Power-Operated Window Systems."
- Risk
- A closing window that does not reverse direction as expected can pinch a driver or passenger before retracting, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy
- Dealers will update the power window operating system software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 22, 2026. Owners may contact customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26C29. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 6, 2026.
What this recall means for you
Some power windows in certain vehicles were previously repaired incorrectly under an earlier recall. When a window closes on an object, it may apply too much force before it reverses, so it does not stop and retract as it should. This means a driver or passenger could be pinched before the window moves back, which increases the risk of injury.
The fix is a software update to the power window operating system. Dealers will perform the update free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 22, 2026. If you have questions, you can contact customer service at 1-866-436-7332, referencing Ford recall number 26C29.
Owners should check whether their vehicle is affected by entering their VIN on NHTSA.gov once VINs become searchable there on July 6, 2026. Until the update is done, be careful when operating power windows, and keep hands, arms, and other body parts clear of window openings.
