- Problem
- New Flyer of America, Inc. (New Flyer) is recalling certain 2012-2025 Xcelsior buses. The buses may have been built without enough emergency exits or the exits may be in an incorrect location. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 217, "Bus Emergency Exits and Window Retention and Release."
- Risk
- An insufficient number, or incorrectly located, of emergency exits can prevent or delay passengers from exiting during an emergency, increasing their risk of injury.
- Remedy
- New Flyer will mail instructions and necessary parts to add additional emergency egress windows, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 8, 2025. Owners may contact New Flyer's customer service at 1-800-241-2947.
What this recall means for you
Some New Flyer Xcelsior buses from model years 2012 through 2019 may have been built with too few emergency exits, or with exits in the wrong location. The buses do not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 217, which governs bus emergency exits and window retention and release.
If there are not enough exits, or they are not placed correctly, passengers may be unable to get out quickly or at all during an emergency, such as a fire or crash. That raises the risk of injury.
Owner notification letters were mailed October 8, 2025. New Flyer will mail instructions and the necessary parts to add additional emergency egress windows, free of charge. Owners can contact New Flyer customer service at 1-800-241-2947, and should check their vehicle identification number for open recalls.
