Volkswagen Passat Recall 24V834: Driver Airbag Inflator Can Explode, Spraying Metal Shards

NHTSA campaign 24V834, reported October 30, 2024, 248,330 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The driver's side frontal airbag inflator can rupture, or explode, because its propellant degrades over time. The degradation is caused by long-term exposure to high humidity, high temperatures, and repeated temperature swings. An explosion can send sharp metal fragments toward the driver or other occupants, which can cause serious injury or death.

The repair is free. Authorized Volkswagen dealers will replace the driver's side front airbag module at no charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 4, 2024. If you have questions, you can contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298.

Do not wait for the letter to act. Check your vehicle identification number (VIN) on the official recall lookup to confirm whether your car has an open recall, and schedule the free repair with a dealer as soon as possible.
