BMW R 18 Recall 24V716: Moisture can overheat reverse gear unit, risking fire

NHTSA campaign 24V716, reported September 26, 2024, 5,048 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

A seal for the reverse gear control unit may deteriorate over time, allowing moisture to get inside the unit. This can cause the unit to overheat, which increases the risk of a fire.

As an interim remedy, the reverse gear control unit will be disconnected from the motorcycle's electrical system, free of charge. Authorized BMW dealers will then install an electrical relay between the battery and the reverse gear control unit, also at no cost to you. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 7, 2025. If you have questions, contact BMW Customer Service at 1-800-525-7417. You can also check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
