Ford Escape Recall 24V440: Adaptive Cruise Control May Brake or Stop Unexpectedly

NHTSA campaign 24V440, reported June 14, 2024, 209 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The radar module that powers adaptive cruise control may have been installed out of alignment at the factory. As a result, the system can mistake an overhead object, such as a sign or bridge, for something in the vehicle's path and slow or stop the car without warning. Related safety features that rely on the same radar, including Pre-Collision Assist, Forward Collision Warning, and Automatic Emergency Braking, may also work less effectively or stop working, which raises the risk of a crash.

If you own a 2023 or 2024 Ford Escape with two-wheel drive and adaptive cruise control, take this seriously. The repair is free. Dealers will adjust the angle of the radar module at no charge. Ford mailed owner notification letters on July 3, 2024. You can also call Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, and check your VIN for open recalls at NHTSA's website or with your dealer.

Until the repair is done, be prepared for unexpected braking and stay alert when using adaptive cruise control, especially on roads with overhead structures.

Safety recall 24V440Ford Motor Company
Component
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL
Problem
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Escape two-wheel drive vehicles equipped with adaptive cruise control. The cruise control radar module was misaligned during production.
Risk
Misalignment of the radar module can result in the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) misclassifying an overhead object as an object in the vehicle's path, causing the vehicle to unexpectedly slow and/or stop. Other safety systems that depend on the radar model (Pre-Collision Assist, Forward Collision Warning, and Auto Emergency Braking) could have diminished or lost function. These conditions increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will adjust the angle of the radar module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 3, 2024. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 24S39.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
