- Problem
- BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2021-2024 BMW R 18B and R 18 Transcontinental motorcycles. The headlight low beam attachment points may break, shifting the reflector out of position, and resulting in insufficient illumination. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
- Risk
- Insufficient illumination from the headlight can reduce visibility or cause a glare for oncoming traffic, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy
- Dealers will replace the headlamp, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 5, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
- Notes
- Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
What this recall means for you
The low-beam headlight on these motorcycles can break at its attachment points. When that happens, the reflector shifts out of position, so the light does not illuminate the road properly and the headlight may fail to meet federal lighting requirements.
Reduced illumination can make it harder for you to see the road ahead, and a misaimed beam can glare into the eyes of oncoming drivers. Both increase the risk of a crash.
An authorized BMW dealer will replace the headlamp free of charge. Owners were mailed notification letters on September 5, 2024, or you can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. You can also check your vehicle's VIN for open recalls to confirm whether your motorcycle is affected.
