- Component
- ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL; SERVICE BRAKES, AIR
- Problem
- Blue Bird Body Company (Blue Bird) is recalling certain 2021-2024 All American and 2021-2022 Vision school buses. A software error in the instrument cluster may cause the air pressure gauges and the visual and audio low air warnings to not function. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 121, "Air Brake Systems."
- Risk
- Air gauges and warnings that do not alert the driver to air pressure loss can result in driving without functioning brakes, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy
- Dealers will update the instrument cluster software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 27, 2023, 2023. Owners may contact Blue Bird's customer service at 1-478-822-2242. Blue Bird's number for this recall is R23CH (School Bus).
- Notes
- Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
What this recall means for you
Some Blue Bird school buses have a software error in the instrument cluster that can stop the air pressure gauges and the visual and audio low air warnings from working. The affected vehicles also do not meet federal air brake safety requirements (FMVSS 121).
Because the gauges and warnings may not alert the driver to a loss of air pressure, a driver could keep operating the bus without functioning brakes, which increases the risk of a crash.
Authorized Blue Bird dealers will update the instrument cluster software at no charge. Owners may contact Blue Bird customer service at 1-478-822-2242 (recall number R23CH). You can also check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
