- Component
- SERVICE BRAKES, AIR:ANTILOCK:ABS WARNING LIGHT
- Problem
- Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain 2021-2024 IC Bus RE, 2022-2024 IC Bus CE, and IC Bus EV school buses. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) indicator light does not remain illuminated when a malfunction exists, and when the vehicle's ignition switch is on, and the vehicle is in motion. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 121, "Air Brake Systems."
- Risk
- An ABS indicator light that fails to remain illuminated will not alert the driver of an ABS malfunction, which could increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy
- Dealers will update the software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 24, 2023. Owners may contact Navistar's customer service at 1-800-448-7825. Navistar's number for this recall is 23516.
- Notes
- Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
What this recall means for you
Certain IC Bus school buses from model years 2021 to 2024 have an anti-lock brake system (ABS) warning light that does not stay on when there is an ABS malfunction while the ignition is on and the bus is moving. The vehicles therefore do not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 121 for air brake systems.
Because the light fails to alert the driver to a problem with the ABS, a fault in the anti-lock system could go unnoticed, which could increase the risk of a crash.
The remedy is a free software update performed by an authorized dealer. Owner notification letters were expected to be mailed July 24, 2023. For questions, contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825 and reference recall number 23516. You can also check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
