Western Star 57X Recall 23V348: Dash turn signals may flash too fast, hiding a burnt-out bulb

NHTSA campaign 23V348, reported May 16, 2023, 47 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

On certain vehicles, the interior turn signal indicator may flash too quickly and fail to match the exterior turn signals. When a turn signal bulb burns out, the indicator may not change its flash rate to warn the driver, so the exterior signal stays dark without the driver knowing. This does not meet federal lighting standard FMVSS 108.

A turn signal that does not work may fail to warn other drivers that your vehicle is turning or changing lanes, which raises the risk of a crash.

Authorized dealers will update the turn signal indicator software free of charge. Owners were mailed notification letters on June 13, 2023. To learn more or ask about the recall, contact Daimler Trucks North America customer service at 1-800-547-0712, and check your VIN for any open recalls.

Problem
Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2023 Western Star 57X vehicles. The interior turn signals may flash too quickly and not align with the exterior turn signal flashing. Interior turn signals that consistently flash too quickly may not change their flash rate to alert the driver to replace the bulbs. An exterior turn signal bulb that is burnt out will not illuminate. Risk
A nonfunctioning exterior turn signal may not notify other drivers of a turning vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
