Ford Explorer Recall 23V305: Backup Camera May Not Display When Screen Is Turned Off

NHTSA campaign 23V305, reported April 28, 2023, 523 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain vehicles have a defect in the display software that controls the backup camera image. If the driver uses the display on/off button to turn the screen off before shifting into reverse, the rearview camera image will not appear when the screen is turned back on. The vehicle does not meet the federal rear visibility standard that governs backup camera performance.

Without a rearview camera image, the driver's view behind the vehicle is reduced, which increases the risk of a crash or injury, particularly when backing up near people, pets, or objects.

The repair is free. An authorized Ford dealer will update the integrated computer screen software at no cost. Owner notification letters were mailed July 27, 2023. You can also contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall 23C14, and check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for any open recalls.
