BMW X5 Recall 23V253: Rear Head Restraints May Lack Locking Tabs, Raising Crash Injury Risk

NHTSA campaign 23V253, reported April 6, 2023, 235 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2023 BMW X5 vehicles may have second-row outboard seat head restraints that were built without locking tabs in the guide sleeves. This means the head restraint may not stay properly in place, so it may not adequately protect a rear-seat occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. The vehicles also do not meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 202, which covers head restraints.

Authorized BMW dealers will inspect the second-row outboard seat head restraint guide sleeves and replace them where needed, at no cost to you. Owner notification letters were mailed on May 31, 2023. If you have questions, you can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, and you can check your vehicle's VIN for open recalls.
