Rivian R1S Recall 23V233: Reverse lights may be hard to see, raising crash risk

NHTSA campaign 23V233, reported March 31, 2023, 5,030 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The reverse lights on certain 2022 and 2023 Rivian R1S vehicles may not be visible from some angles. Because the light beam can be hard to see, the vehicle does not fully meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108, which governs lamps and reflective devices.

Reduced visibility of the reverse lights increases the risk of a crash, since other drivers and pedestrians may not notice that the vehicle is backing up.

Rivian will repair or replace the reverse lights free of charge at an authorized dealer. Owner notification letters were mailed July 12, 2023. To confirm the repair, contact Rivian customer service at 1-855-748-4265, referencing recall FSAM-1216, and check your VIN for any open recalls.
