Rivian R1T Recall 23V109: Passenger Airbag May Not Deploy in a Crash

NHTSA campaign 23V109, reported February 22, 2023, 12,716 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2022 Rivian R1S and R1T vehicles have a faulty automatic locking retractor sensor in the front passenger seat belt system. The sensor may incorrectly report that the seat belt's automatic locking feature is ON when it is actually OFF. As a result, the front passenger airbag may be suppressed or deploy improperly, and the vehicle does not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 for occupant crash protection.

If the airbag does not deploy as intended, the front passenger faces a higher risk of injury in a crash. Owners should not ignore this recall, especially if a passenger regularly rides in the front seat.

Dealers will inspect the front passenger seat belt system and replace components as needed, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 5, 2023. To confirm whether your vehicle is affected, check your VIN for open recalls, or contact Rivian customer service at 1-888-748-4261 and reference recall FSAM-1166.
