BMW 230i Recall 23V099: Windows and sunroof may close after key is removed

NHTSA campaign 23V099, reported February 17, 2023, 3,193 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain BMW vehicles may allow the power windows and sunroof to be closed even after the digital key has been removed from the vehicle. This means the windows or sunroof could close without the key present, which does not meet the federal power window safety standard.

If the windows or sunroof close unintentionally with someone still inside, it can increase the risk of injury to occupants. Owners should be especially careful around children and passengers who may be inside the car when it is not being actively driven.

BMW will update the Electronic Control Unit software at an authorized dealer free of charge. Until the update is installed, the digital key function over cellular service and Wi-Fi will be deactivated. Owner notification letters were expected to be mailed April 11, 2023, and you can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. You can also check your vehicle identification number for open recalls.
