Kia Sportage Recall 22V800: Engine Fire Risk From Brake Control Module

NHTSA campaign 22V800, reported October 24, 2022, 71,704 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The electronic control unit that runs the anti-lock brake and traction control system can overheat and start a fire in the engine compartment. This can happen while the vehicle is parked or being driven, and a fire increases the risk of injury.

Until the repair is done, park the vehicle outside and away from buildings and other vehicles. This recall repeats and expands an earlier recall, so the fix is needed even if you had a previous repair. Authorized Kia dealers will inspect and replace the brake control unit, its wiring harness, and its fuses as needed, at no cost to you.

Owner notification letters were mailed on December 22, 2022. You can call Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 (Kia recall number SC253), or check your vehicle identification number (VIN) on a recall lookup site to see whether your vehicle has an open recall.
