- Problem
- Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Model S, Model X, and 2017-2020 Model 3 vehicles equipped with Autopilot Computer 2.5 and operating certain firmware releases. The rearview image may not immediately display when the vehicle begins to reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
- Risk
- A delayed rearview camera image reduces the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy
- Tesla will perform an over-the-air (OTA) software update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 17, 2022. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla's number for this recall is SB-22-00-004.
- Notes
- Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
What this recall means for you
Certain Tesla Model 3, Model S, and Model X vehicles from 2017 to 2020 may not show the rearview camera image right away when the car starts to reverse. The vehicles were built with Autopilot Computer 2.5 and certain firmware releases, and they do not meet the federal rear visibility standard.
A delayed camera image means the driver has less view behind the vehicle at the moment it begins to move backward. That reduced rear view increases the risk of a crash, such as hitting a person, an object, or another vehicle.
Owners should expect a free over-the-air software update from Tesla, which is installed remotely and does not require a dealer visit. Owner notification letters were mailed May 17, 2022. You can contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752 and check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
