Kia Sportage Recall 22V051: Brake Control Module Can Short and Cause Engine Fire

NHTSA campaign 22V051, reported February 2, 2022, 126,747 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The module that controls the anti-lock and traction control brake system (the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit) can malfunction and develop an electrical short. This can lead to a fire in the engine compartment, while the vehicle is parked or being driven.

An engine compartment fire increases the risk of injury. Until the repair is done, the manufacturer advises parking the vehicle outside and away from structures.

Authorized Kia dealers will install a new fuse for the module's circuit board at no cost to you. Owner notification letters were mailed September 22, 2022. You can contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 (Kia recall number SC227), or check your VIN for open recalls.
