Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Recall 21V985: Wrong spare tire can disable anti-lock brakes

NHTSA campaign 21V985, reported December 16, 2021, 626 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2019-2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks equipped with accessory road tires and 17-inch wheels may have a spare tire that is not compatible with those accessory wheels. When this mismatch exists, the anti-lock brake system (ABS) may not function properly under certain conditions.

A brake system that does not work as designed can increase the risk of a crash, particularly when braking hard or on slippery surfaces where ABS is needed to keep the wheels from locking up and to help the driver keep steering control.

Dealers will replace the spare tire with a new 17-inch spare tire and wheel assembly that is compatible with the accessory wheels, at no cost to owners. Dealers will also install a new spare tire information label and provide an owner's manual insert explaining which spare to use with the accessory road tires and with the original 17-inch tires. Owners can contact GM customer service at 1-800-462-8782 (GMC customer service uses the same number). Check your VIN for open recalls on the NHTSA website, and reference recall number N212346510.
