Ford Explorer Recall 21V652: Side Air Bag May Deploy Improperly in a Crash

NHTSA campaign 21V652, reported August 23, 2021, 592 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Some side curtain air bags may have attachment weld studs that could detach when the side air bag deploys. If that happens, the air bag may not deploy properly, which raises the risk of injury in a crash.

An improperly deployed side air bag can leave occupants less protected during a side impact, increasing the chance of injury. The notice states that these vehicles do not meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 214, which covers side impact protection.

Authorized Ford dealers will replace the side air bag assemblies free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 10, 2021. You can also contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall 21C19, and check your VIN for any open recalls.
