BMW X3 Recall 21V598: Engine Software May Cause Loss of Braking Assist at Startup

NHTSA campaign 21V598, reported August 2, 2021, 50,024 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The engine management software in certain vehicles may cause a loss of braking assist during engine start. When this happens, the brakes still work, but the power assist that makes them easier to press is temporarily unavailable, so the driver must apply much more force to stop.

Loss of braking assist can increase the risk of a crash. Owners should be aware of this issue, especially when starting the vehicle and pulling away.

The repair is free. Authorized dealers will update the engine management software at no charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 17, 2021. You can also contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, and check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
