Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Recall 21V578: Spare tire can disable anti-lock brakes, raising crash risk

NHTSA campaign 21V578, reported July 29, 2021, 86 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2020-2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and GMC Sierra 2500 trucks equipped with a 17-inch spare tire and either an 18-inch or 20-inch accessory road tire may have a problem: using the spare with other 18-inch or 20-inch tires can prevent the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) from engaging.

When the ABS cannot control the rear wheels independently, the risk of a crash increases because the brakes may not perform as designed in a hard stop or on slippery pavement.

Dealers will provide the appropriate spare tire and apply a new spare tire information label, free of charge. Owners can contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, and should check their VIN for open recalls.
