Utilimaster Walk-IN Van Recall 21V572: Bumper Can Detach and Injure Someone Using It as a Step

What this recall means for you

The fasteners that attach the shock mount bracket to the underside of the vehicle frame may fail. This can cause the shock mount bracket to break and the bumper to detach from the vehicle.

The danger is that a person using the bumper as a step could have it fall off under their weight, which increases the risk of injury. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed on August 6, 2021, and a second letter will be sent once the remedy is available.

If you own an affected van, contact Shyft Group customer service at 1-800-582-3454 and reference recall 21-19. The repair is free: Shyft Group will replace the fasteners, install a spacer, and inspect and replace the shock mount bracket if needed. You can also check your VIN for open recalls.

Problem
Shyft Group is recalling certain 2020-2021 Utilimaster Walk-In Vans. The fasteners that attach the shock mount bracket to the underside of the vehicle frame may fail, possibly resulting in a broken shock mount bracket and bumper detachment.
Risk
The bumper could fall off when it is utilized by a person as a step, increasing their risk of injury.
Remedy
Shyft Group will replace the fasteners that attach the shock mount bracket to the underside of the vehicle frame, install a spacer, and inspect and replace, as necessary, the shock mount bracket. All repairs will be performed free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed on August 6, 2021. A second letter will be mailed once the remedy is available.
