Land Rover Defender Recall 21V435: Rear lights can fail, raising crash risk

NHTSA campaign 21V435, reported June 8, 2021, 2,622 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain Land Rover Defender vehicles from model years 2020 to 2022 have smoked rear light assemblies. A voltage spike, which can be triggered by a bright light shining on the back of the vehicle, can cause the turn signals, brake lights, and tail lights to stop working.

When these lights fail to illuminate, other drivers may not see you braking or turning, which can reduce visibility and increase the risk of a crash.

Dealers will replace the rear light assemblies free of charge. Owner letters were mailed September 27, 2021, or you can contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837 (recall N598). You should also check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
