Chevrolet Tahoe Recall 21V421: Air Bag Warning Light May Not Alert You to Faults

NHTSA campaign 21V421, reported June 10, 2021, 285,622 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Some 2021 GM vehicles have a software problem in the communications gateway module. When that module loses communication with the sensing diagnostic module (SDM), it does not handle the loss correctly, so the air bag malfunction indicator light may come on inconsistently or not at all. The light is meant to warn you when there is a problem with the air bag system.

If the warning light fails to illuminate, you may not know your air bags have a fault. That raises the risk of injury in a crash, because the air bags may not deploy as designed when needed.

The software update is free. A dealer can perform it, or it may be delivered over the air. Check your vehicle's VIN for open recalls, and contact your brand's customer service if you have questions: Buick 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet 1-800-222-1020, or GMC 1-800-462-8782.
