Kia Optima Recall 21V331: Brake fluid leak can cause electrical short and fire

NHTSA campaign 21V331, reported May 10, 2021, 440,370 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Brake fluid may leak inside the hydraulic electronic control unit (HECU) that operates the anti-lock and traction control brake system. The leak can cause an electrical short inside the unit.

An electrical short in the HECU increases the risk of a fire, whether the vehicle is parked or being driven. Until the repair is done, the manufacturer advises parking outside and away from other vehicles and structures.

An authorized Kia dealer will install a new multi-fuse and inspect the HECU for leaks, replacing the HECU if necessary, at no cost to you. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 2, 2021. This recall supersedes earlier recall 20V-519. To check whether your vehicle has open recalls, enter your VIN on the NHTSA website, or contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 (Kia recall number SC212).
